One of best informed citizens of Germany made following statements; dissatisfaction with Nazi regime increasing; food and clothing scarce and of poor quality; indignation prevails in churches; lack of freedom of speech resented; revolution will break out among masses; Army will step in to restore order and reinstate constitutional monarchy; men in power are small gang, probably only fourteen; political murders continue but usually now in private; army leaders are moderating influence in foreign policy; thanks to their wisdom an incursion into Austria or Czechoslovakia will not take place; intelligent Germans distressed when they hear men like [Sir Nevile] Henderson express feigned admiration for Hitler; governments who might be inclined to extend credits to Germany should do so on one condition - freedom of German press, which would spell immediate downfall of regime.en_US
