| Abstract | Este artigo é resultado de pesquisa sobre o protagonismo público de mulheres por meio da filantropia e da assistência social no Brasil durante a primeira metade do século XX. Consideramos necessário repensar, tanto do ponto de vista conceitual, quanto empírico, o fenômeno ainda pouco conhecido do associativismo feminino na sociedade brasileira. O artigo propõe uma reflexão sobre a agência (agency) feminina por meio das práticas associativas de diferentes motivações como o abolicionismo, a caridade, a filantropia e o feminismo, como também a respeito do silêncio historiográfico a respeito das práticas associativas femininas geralmente associadas ao conservadorismo político e social das mulheres de elite no Brasil. Abstract: This article is the result of research on the public role of women through philanthropy and social assistance in Brazil during the first half of the 20th century. We consider it necessary to rethink, both from the conceptual and empirical points of view, the still little-known phenomenon of women's associations in Brazilian society. The article proposes a reflection on the female agency through associative practices of different motivations such as abolitionism, charity, philanthropy, and feminism, as well as regarding the historiographical silence about the female associative practices generally associated with political and social conservatism of the elite women in Brazil. | en_US |
