DescriptionThis narrative forms the first part of an exhibit script intended to illuminate for visitors the changes wrought on the landscape over time and the incredible influence held by the Dickinson family over the St. Jones Neck community. The exhibit will contain a series of maps with graphic images of buildings, landscape features, and patterns in acquisition of land. Each map in the series will deal directly with a particular theme: 1) Acquisition and Disposition of Land, 1676-1857 2) Agricultural Tenancy and Land Management, 1780--1820 3) Construction and Repairs, 1790-1808 4) Diversification and Land Reclamation, 1790-1 850 5) Hurricane Damage, 1880s 6) Twentieth-century Influences on the River, 1900- 1940. This narrative covers the first four themes in detail. The last two will be dealt with at a later date in connection with work currently under way by the Delaware National Estuary and Riverine Research project.en
