| Abstract | The Mid-Atlantic region encompasses 5 states (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia) and portions of 3 BCRs. The NBCI has identified 4.6 million, high-priority acres for bobwhite and bird conservation in these states totaling 14 million acres. Although these states lie on the northern fringe of current bobwhite range bobwhites were historically widespread and abundant in the region. Some of the steepest population declines have been recorded in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. For example since 1996 bobwhite populations in the Mid-Atlantic have declined 6%/year; within that, there are worrisome declines such as a 13%/year decline in New Jersey since 1980. The regional declines are especially troublesome when in 1966 the national Breeding Bird Survey recorded the highest densities of bobwhite in the country right in Delaware (Figure 22). | |
