Abstract
Description
After telephone call from [Laurence] Duggan this morning, called on [Ezequiel] Padilla and told him that U.S. had decided in the interests of American solidarity to recognize new Argentine government; action of Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay made it difficult for other Latin American states to withhold recognition; Padilla agreed; said he was seeing President [Avila Camacho] immediately and that undoubtedly he would receive the Argentine Minister in the Foreign Office this afternoon, which is equivalent to Mexico's recognition of Argentine Government; Argentine Minister, [Alberto M.] Candiote had insisted on seeing Padilla the day before and made quite a scene when word was passed to him that Padilla could not see him until Mexican Government decided upon its course of action; supposes recognition necessary, but fears effect on other Latin American countries, particularly Chile; situation a setback to democratic institutions.
