Abstract
Description
Portrayals of poorly-dressed Black men in a rural setting, in keeping with the minstrel character whose comedy was used to enforce ideas of Black men as ignorant and idle through caricatured speech and a preference for leisure over labor. The "Jim Crow" character was a rural counterpart to the "Zip Coon" character.
