A lawyer, railroad expert, and historian, Adams served as president of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1884 to 1890. Dissatisfied with the life of a businessman, he quit his job to devote his attention to writing history. Among his many volumes are Three Episodes of Massachusetts History (1892), and Massachusetts: Its History and Historians (1893).
