AbstractThe topic of this work is the examination of predictability and longevity of links in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) and in large-scale urban mesh networks (LUMNets). Longevity prediction is often used across routing protocols in MANETs and mesh networks, explicitly or implicitly. As opposed to previous studies that have assumed trivial mobility models and propagation models more suitable for battlefields and other non-obstructed areas, simulation data used for this analysis is from realistic mobility model and realistic propagation model. Mobility model consists of three hierarchical layers and is based on data collected through a number of surveys. Propagation is modeled using beam tracing. Several conclusions are made. In general, the predictability of link lifetimes is moderate; the best that can be achieved is a 60% reduction in the mean square error (MSE) of the prediction error when all the prediction factors are utilized.en_US
