| Abstract | To those who first set foot on the American continent, recording nature meant the need to quantify the natural resources that the land had to offer. To do so, they first relied on the assumptions made by the authors of antiquity. For the physician Francisco Hernández, this listing required not only knowledge of the plants, animals and minerals of the old and new worlds, but also a translation of the most important work on the theme, Pliny’s Natural History, a translation that he modernized by adding commentaries. A physician by training, Hernández was also a humanist, being cognizant of the works of Erasmus of Rotterdam and the theories of Vesalius (Andreas van Wesel) as well as Pliny the Elder and Aristotle, whose works he translated from Greek into Latin and Castilian. Resumen Historiar la naturaleza implicó, para los primeros visitantes que pisaron suelo del Nuevo Mundo, realizar una cuantificación de los recursos naturales que ofrecía esta tierra. Para generar ese conocimiento se partió de los postulados que los autores de la antigüedad generaron al ser ellos el punto de partida para un primer acercamiento. Para el médico Francisco Hernández, historiar la naturaleza no sólo abarcó el conocimiento de vegetales, animales o minerales del viejo y del Nuevo Mundo, sino que comprendió la traducción de la obra más importante del tema, la Historia natural de Plinio, traducción a la que le agregó comentarios que contribuyeron a su modernización. Médico de formación, Hernández formó parte de los considerados humanistas, siendo conocedor de los trabajos de Erasmo de Rotterdam y de las teorías de Vesalio, además de los trabajos de Plinio El Viejo y de Aristóteles, los cuales tradujo del griego al latín y al castellano. | en_US |
