Description | A native of Massachusetts, Stoddard began his career as a poet, but when he could not support his family, he turned to Nathaniel Hawthorne who helped him get a job as a customs inspector. Stoddard returned the favor a few years later when he helped Herman Melville procure the same job. Stoddard is the author of several volumes, including Footprints (1849); The King's Bell (1863); The Book of the East and Other Poems (1871); and Recollections, Personal and Literary (1903). | en_US |
