DescriptionHow do communities respond to disasters? What implications do these responses have for the mental health of the impacted population? How one answers the first question depends, in part, upon one's formulation of a "community." The second question has yet to be systematically explored by disaster researchers. In this paper, we present findings from research on community responses to disaster events and, where possible, draw relevant inferences about possible links between these responses and the mental health of affected residents. First, however, some discussion of conceptions of community structure and functioning seems warranted.en
