Abstract
Description
Recalls presentation of credentials in Vienna; had hoped for a few days rest before presenting letters, but was met at hotel on arrival by Alfred Kliefoth, first secretary of Legation, with information that Chancellor [Engelbert] Dollfuss would like to see Messersmith the following day; next day presented letters first to President [Wilhelm] Miklas who was very cordial, then went to see Chancellor; was told to wait a few minutes in anteroom; in five minutes door of Chancellor's office opened and whole Cabinet filed out; was ushered in immediately and saw a little man scurrying about emptying ashtrays, he looked up and said, "Well, you've caught the Chancellor cleaning up"; typical of the basic simplicity of the man.
