Abstract
Abstract This paper investigates the fecundity of the “human services recipient” category in the study of welfare programs in the early decades of the 20th century in Argentina. It also looks at the construction of the assisted as a group with multiple, fragmented and heterogeneous identities defined through relationships of dependency, unequal reciprocity and resistance. Also studied are the relations of dominance and the role of subordinates in this relationship in hopes of contributing to the understanding of the complex social relations between the welfare program elites and the subalterns in the social welfare institutions.
