DescriptionCalls attention to article by Frank L. Kluckhohn in Saturday Evening Post entitled "Argentina: New-World Superstate", and to editorial comment on article in Washington Post; both article and editorial characteristic of the inaccurate and biased reporting which has appeared recently with reference to the Argentine; Kluckhohn is a master at presenting distorted point of view to American public; statement in editorial that Argentine Government has most of the Nazi trappings completely inaccurate; one who has had first-hand contact with "Nazi trappings" in Germany sees nothing like that in Argentina; to state that "educators are muzzled" is inaccurate; there is no more control over educational system in Argentina than in U.S.; statement that press is strangled through Government newsprint control is false; newspapers free to print what they like and two largest newspapers, both opposed to Government, get bulk of newsprint; Buenos Aires police force relatively large and efficient, but not "ruthless" as Kluckhohn claims; statement that Perón has unions under his thumb not correct; while large part of labor force supports Perón, another part opposes him; not true that Perón adulterated the courts; Supreme Court impeached by Chamber of Deputies and trial now going on in Senate; other courts unaffected; to say Perón has "placed the country's banks under direction of his henchmen so that loans can be channeled to suit political aims" is inaccurate; under new banking law, Central Bank is given some control over banks, but foreign as well as native banks state that this control has not interfered with normal activities and has not been used for political purposes; implications in editorial that Argentina has military objectives against its neighbors are absurd, for if true Argentina would not be interested in defense pact as it obviously is; unfortunate that these two widely read publications should so mis-represent facts to public; is firm believer in freedom of press, but press also has responsibility to report objectively and accurately.en_US
