| Abstract | Henry Francis du Pont became increasingly conscious of architectural accuracy as he added period interiors to Winterthur. His architectural installations gained integrity from the 1930s to the 1950s, and the 1940 Flock Room was an especially important step in this transition. ☐ Research indicates that there was not a corresponding change during these years in the way Winterthur interiors were furnished. The proportional quantities of furniture remained relatively constant, as did the way in which these furnishings were displayed within the rooms. ☐ Architect Thomas Waterman encouraged du Pont to view architectural elements as he viewed the decorative arts: as American craft products worthy of the most advantageous display available. Du Pont’s changing attitudes about interior woodwork at Winterthur are more than a gesture to increase the historical accuracy of the interiors; the transition reflects a growing respect of native architecture as art product. | en_US |
