Abstract
Description
After forwarding this telegram will call on Foreign Minister and inform him President Truman considers mission complete, has "accepted resignation", and desires return to U.S.; will make no further comment and will refrain from making any comments to press; recalls conversations with former Secretary Byrnes and President before accepting mission and again in Jan. 1947; was in accord with them regarding present mission and cannot understand reasons for precipitate "acceptance of resignation", but accepts President's statement that he has been moved by "over-riding interests of the country"; was entrusted with two missions in Argentina - to secure compliance by the Argentine with her inter-American commitments and to bring U.S. relationships with Argentina into better standing; has been largely successful in both, but had hoped to remain a little longer to consolidate position; is placed in difficult position as President can appreciate; cannot ask wife to return by air and doesn't know yet when can get ship; there is also much packing to do.
