Sister's strength improving; Dr. [S.W.] Saxon in difficulty with authorities for his dealings with a "Swiss individual"; had warned him against transactions involving German currency laws; got lawyer for him and intervened personally for him with the Customs Police; barely save him from jail; negotiations concerning closing of the Jewish Telegraph Agency very laborious; matter presented to the Foreign Office but no answer yet; attended "affair" given by Dr. [Alfred] Rosenberg for foreign diplomats and foreign press; only one American correspondent present, but saw and talked freely with several high Nazi officials; expressed to them frankly U.S. disapproval of Nazi policies; Truman Smith [Military Attaché] trying to curry favor with Nazis, writes glowing reports of situation in Germany; Foreign Press Association held ball, which was boycotted by German government; correspondents wary, which may effect their reporting; [Hjalmar] Schacht raging over economic conditions; believes him to be "putting his eggs in another basket"; tension is increasing; war will start as soon as General Staffs say that the preponderance of power is on the side of the dictators; Fritz Eichberg better, but Olga still ill; has been helping them with their private affairs, but they are discouraged; Henry Mann does not want [Hugh] Corby Fox to return to Germany.
