Acknowledges Messersmith's letters of Dec. 2 and 14; glad to have Messersmith's views on [Egon] Berger-Waldenegg, who, with his wife, came to dinner last night; has not yet met the younger Grazzi though his older brother [Emanuele] from the Ministry of Press and Propaganda, came to dinner recently; planning to have talk with Berger-Waldenegg soon on Central European affairs; glad Christmas holidays near; has been leading much too active existence; evening work heavy and hours very late; after official family gathering on Christmas Day, going to Amalfi for four days rest, returning to Rome Jan. 2 for annual court function; thanks Messersmith for news of Leland and Nancy Harrison; had not heard they were returning home; exceedingly difficult to get authentic political news; Foreign Office well disposed, but they have no idea what tomorrow's developments will be; [Galeazzo] Ciano very friendly, but also very busy; [Virginio] Gayda, official spokesman, gives clue occasionally, but Gayda not always reliable; extends Christmas greetings.
