In that study an effort was made to focus on interactional patterns which were not yet institutionalized or regulated by a set of established structural relationships. To assist in this analysis, the emergent norm theory of collective behavior was employed to distinguish developmental phases of group formation. While the problem of structural differentiation was recognized at that time, an adequate understanding of this process was not acquired.
