Kitson, Christopher2018-09-282018-09-282018-05http://udspace.udel.edu/handle/19716/23860This thesis investigates the use of water electrolysis cells for possible use in asteroid mining applications and possible impurities the cell may encounter, with both theoretical and experimental aspects considered. To start, topics on electrolysis, rocket propulsion, orbital mechanics, In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), spectroscopy, and asteroid composition are reviewed. Theoretical determinations of probable water impurities for carbonaceous chondrite asteroids (Tholsen C-type) are made, and available lab chemicals containing nitrogen, sulfur, carbon, and iron are selected. The design of the anionic Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer cell used is explained in detail, with care to explain its assembly and methods used to fabricate its components. Experimental results and observations are then reported. Finally, observations are integrated with theory to formulate potential impacts and topics for future research.Mechanical Engineering, Water Electrolysis, Electrolysis, In-Situ Resource Utilization, ISRU, MARCO POLO, Asteroid Mining, Carbonaceous Chondrite, Tholsen C-Type, Proton Exchange Membrane, PEM, Impurities ElectrolysisTHE EFFECT OF IMPURITIES ON POLYMER ELECTROLYTE MEMBRANE ELECTROLYZERS FOR IN-SITU ASTEROID HYDROGEN GENERATIONThesis
