Description
Tells of decision to leave teaching profession and go into Foreign Service; took examination in 1914 and passed; was subsequently interviewed by John Bassett Moore who was then Counselor of State Department, and was advised by Moore to go into Consular rather than diplomatic service; was told of appointment to post in Fort Erie, Canada and after week of instruction in Washington and another week in Consulate at Toronto proceeded with wife to Fort Erie.
