Description | Regrets not being able to send Messersmith more information in recent weeks; Miss Pulvermacher has been ill and cannot trust anyone else with confidential information; has not had time yet to reply to Messersmith's memoranda on unification of the two branches and the visa practice; office running smoothly; thinks [James Klahr] Huddle comes on inspection tour; receive Messersmith's letter addressed to Henry Mann; Mann read letter and said he would do what he could to help the young man, but thought his prospects better in New York than in London; Bella F[romm] called said her husband had not made connection with Messersmith's friends; he will stay in New York, learn English well, and thinks he can push articles he went there to sell; enclosing memorandum on present internal political situation; this letter being mailed by friend from Steamship Europa en route to Havre and U.S.; thinks war not imminent; internally Hitler and radicals have upper hand, but army knows war now would be suicide and in last analysis it will be army's decision; has tried to get information regarding visit of Austrian Foreign Minister [Guido Schmidt] but little forthcoming; has impression little of importance happened; Germans gave Russians new credit of 300,000,000 marks; deal closed Oct. 8 or 9; Germany anxious to get Russian ores. | en_US |
