Just received letter from husband in Paris giving facts about situation in Spain and along border; situation of 440,000 refugees in France no less tragic; now [Georges] Bonnet manoeuvering to get them out of France and back to Spain where he knows they will face Franco's firing squads; some talk about South American countries taking numbers of Spanish refugees, but nothing definite so far proposed; transportation would be major problem; it would be helpful if President Roosevelt called on these countries in some tactful way to make definite proposals for taking in refugees and for U.S. through its relief organizations to undertake transportation; the British too would help; immediate problem is to prove to French authorities that the Spanish refugees in France have not been forgotten by whole world and are not to be left to the tender mercies of Franco; another urgent problem is the saving of lives of hundreds of thousands of good Republicans still in Spain; a word from the right place to authorities in Madrid and ships sent by U.S., England, and France to Republican ports to take these people off when collapse comes would be of enormous value; if U.S. takes initiative, is sure England and France will follow; is sure Allen realizes that steps to meet both problems must be taken at once if they are to be successful; knows Allen will do what he can to bring situation to attention of his friends. | en_US |
