DescriptionOriginal in Sypherd Papers. Had bad time at beginning of year with ulcer and spent several months in Lahey Clinic and in New England Baptist Hospital in Boston; ulcer cured but still on strict diet; hoped to see Sypherd before returning to Mexico; spent a few days with Helene [Layton] but was not able to move about; not likely to go north again until next spring; if Sypherd realized how pleasant and interesting Mexico City is he would overcome his reluctance to flying or the three-day train trip and pay the Messersmiths a visit; since retiring on Apr. 1 from Mexlight gave up big house in the city and moved to smaller house, but it is very comfortable and has several spare bedrooms; did not give up house in Cuernavaca and is gradually spending more time there; has several score boxes of papers in Mexico City and Cuernavaca which have been unopened since retirement from Foreign Service in 1947; no reason now for not doing the writing as planned, but needs to get papers properly arranged first and that will be big job; is thinking of adding room to Cuernavaca house to use for that purpose, and employing couple of people to help sort papers; if Sypherd thinks University of Delaware is still interested in having the papers after he, Messersmith, has finished with them, will put codicil in will to that effect; didn't know when joining Mexlight that it was such a big undertaking; Mexlight biggest private company in Mexico and the biggest in electricity field; in five years with company, completed program involving expenditure of 80 million dollars for new plant and distribution facilities; last year for first time in years company paid dividends on its stock, and has reason to believe it will continue to pay; received a great deal of satisfaction - as well as another ulcer; has become expert rose grower at Cuernavaca and has some beautiful specimens.en_US
