Enclosed with No. 796. Politis called and said he had talked to Gedye, explaining why mail was opened, and that he was ignoring the threat implied in the letter; their conversation ended amicably; Gedye called today and was told that he had made a serious tactical error in writing such a letter to the Chief of Mission of a foreign government and that his superiors in New York would not approve; Gedye did not admit his error, but turned the discussion to other matters; Gedye a good correspondent and on the whole a man of good principles, but is lacking in tact.en_US
