Abstract
This dissertation sought to examine audience framing related to Australian college punters in the U.S., the effects that various forms of sports media have on attitudes toward these athletes, and the extent to which textual and visual framing impacts attitudes toward Australian punters and punters more broadly. Drawing on survey data (including both open-ended and close-ended responses) and experimental data across two studies, this dissertation highlights the influence of media and value predispositions on attitudes toward international athletes and the often-forgotten position of punter. By addressing these topics, the dissertation extends research on the role of media in normalizing and legitimizing non-normative athletes and in the construction of national identity. Moreover, it exemplifies the theoretical utility of framing as a process within the field of sports media and communication. ☐ Keywords: media framing, audience framing, cultivation, survey, experiment, sports media
