Acknowledges letters of Dec. 30 and Jan. 8; account of life of General [Hans] von Seeckt most interesting; Department receives full edition of London Times and it is circulated through division as it arrives, but this should not deter Messersmith from calling attention to articles meriting particular consideration; question of trade negotiations with Austria given preliminary examination; it was decided to follow Messersmith's suggestion and not take the initiative, but await further developments at Austrian end.
