Abstract

Description

During two months travelling in Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, and France found everybody extremely pessimistic about developments in Europe; found countries bordering on Germany infected by "German disease"; talked in Zürich with Dr. Somary, who reported German grain transports not success and doubts, even if Germany succeeds in "organizing" the Ukraine, she can get enough food-stuffs to feed the German people; lacking success in this direction, Hitler will probably try to find another way out by attacking Western countries; heard from reliable sources that in Germany events of November 1938 have disgusted every intelligent person, even some Party members; while in Locarno met some fine people from Genoa who reported that in Northern Italy dissatisfaction with Mussolini growing rapidly; P.S. leaving Europe on French steamer "Champlain" Feb. 8.
