Abstract
Description
Had conversation with Hungarian official just returned from Germany; according to him, [Joachim von] Ribbentrop now out of favor with Hitler because he failed in efforts to make agreement with Russians; Goering now more to fore; Hitler himself now convinced England will not yield again; any war unpopular with general public in Germany; General Staff in Germany now more subservient to Nazi dictates; [Hitler's] Tannenberg speech on August 27 expected to mark critical time; Hungarians and Poles believe German mechanized forces would breakdown under Polish road conditions, but road conditions didn't stop Italians in Abyssinia; Hitler, according to those close to him, cannot understand "double policy" of countries of Southeastern Europe who make continued efforts to be friends and increase commerce with and receive aid from both Germany and Western powers; British radio carrying on excellent propaganda in Germany; Hungarians certain Poles will fight if invaded; present Hungarian government held to axis only as long as peace continues, and adherence to axis through Rome; present Hungarian government would not participate in war against Poland; President of Lower House, [Koloman de] Darányi ill and wishes to resign, but selection of successor will be difficult; [Bela] Imrédy logical candidate, but would not be loyal helper for Premier [Paul] Teleki as Daranyi has been.
