Abstract
Description
Has felt the strain of work and should take it easier, but with so much to do that is difficult; staying in Vienna for Christmas; having Brazilian, Argentine, and Chilean Ministers and their families as well as U.S. Official family for Christmas dinner; only Latin Americans having resident ministers in Vienna; had thought of urging Phillips and family to come for holidays, but most of the people Phillips would want to see would be away at the time; present plans are to leave for home at end of March; hopes Phillips can come before then; had visit from Leland and Nancy Harrison [Minister to Rumania] recently before they left for home for holiday; Nancy consulted doctor in Vienna, but was given clean bill of health; Ex-King [Carol of Rumania] came to Vienna on Dec. 13 and plans to stay at nearby castle of Eugene Rothschild for several months if he is allowed to have some peace; shall tell American correspondents he should be let alone; Austro-German trade negotiations started today; some agreement will be reached but it will be more advantageous to Germany than to Austria; has suggested to Austrians that Germany and Italy are not their only customers, that trade with U.S. is developing favorably, and that it would be a mistake for Austria to tie her hands with either Italy or Germany; extends Christmas and New Year greetings.
