Abstract
Description
Copy from Sypherd Papers. Enjoyed Messersmith's interesting letter of April 12 and glad to learn he will be seeing the Messersmiths in Newark during second half of May; cannot speak with authority as to possible publication of Messersmith's diplomatic experiences during the forties; is sure memoirs would be informative and interesting and presently the most desirable project; will be pleased to read notes sent and may possibly make comments which will help Messersmith arrive at decision; has learned Dr. Perkins expects to be in town during week beginning May 23; agrees to Messersmith's talking to Alfred Knopf about book, but should not like him to think request for information about possible costs and matter of subsidization rose from any thought that he himself might be interested in possibilities; Knopf felt at time manuscript was submitted book of this sort would not be commercially profitable; regrets cannot entertain Messersmiths as overnight guests, as graudate student now occupying only spare bedroom, but glad to extend every other hospitality.
