Located on Long Island’s south shore within the Village of Freeport, Nassau County, New York, the Woodcleft Waterfront serves as a gateway between inland neighborhoods and the greater waterfront. This is due to its proximity to major roadways and coastal access points. As coastal communities continue to experience environmental degradation due to development pressures and vulnerability to climate change, the role of landscape architecture becomes exponentially more important. Guided by the research question,
To what extent can landscape architectural research inform site-design strategies that strengthen human-environment relationships and promote social gathering within our naturally designed landscapes?
The following project investigates how ecological restoration and community-centered public spaces can reconnect people with their coastal environments.
This project reimagines Woodcleft Canal as a dynamic waterfront landscape that strengthens community connection to the working harbor while embracing the site’s existing coastal charm. Through the study of precedent projects and site-responsive design, this work seeks to show how landscape architecture can balance environmental performance with social activation. The design intent focuses on enhancing pedestrian circulation, expanding opportunities for gathering, and integrating tidal ecologies into the public realm. These efforts shape a more resilient waterfront that celebrates coastal processes and Freeport’s maritime identity.
