Abstract

Description

Was told by [Rudolf] Diehls, head of Gestapo that when Messersmith's name was mentioned, Hitler frothed at the mouth, but that Goering had given specific instructions that he was not to be molested; knew Nazi authorities wanted no attack on an American official as it would cause them too much inconvenience, but didn't discount possibility of unauthorized attack by fanatics; on two occasions was almost run down by high powered car coming out of narrow street leading to courtyard occupied by dependencies of S.A. and S.S. and near offices of Consulate General; obvious to Messersmith that his movements were watched, and that the two incidents were deliberate efforts to run him down.
