Description | Spoke at meeting of International Women's Club in Mexico City July 17; sending copies of English and Spanish text; parts of it may appropriately be given publicity in other American republics through means at Department's disposal; two months ago was invited to meeting of "Unión Ibero Americana de Mujeres" in honor of U.S.; any organization using term "Ibero" instead of "Hispano" feels sentimental ties with Spain; meeting turned out to be strongly Catholic; distinguished Mexican woman spoke; her pacifist attitude obvious; gave impression that faith alone; could save world from Hitler; decided to seize first opportunity to make speech which would show what Axis powers were really doing to Church and religion; church in Mexico remarkably silent and attitude toward war effort lukewarm; same situation exists in other Latin American republics; some really believe Germany and Italy are defenders of the Catholic faith; asks Duggan to use speech as he desires. | en_US |
