Abstract

Description

Enclosure: See No. 1812. Enclosing copy of article by Virginia Prewett which appeared in Washington Post; article lacks both objectivity and accuracy; Embassy made complete inquiry and found no basis for the report that Fritz Mandl was starting a chain of newspapers; Mandl may have supplied arms to Italy during Ethiopian campaign and he certainly did to the Austrian Heimwehr, but not to Nazi Germany as Miss Prewett states; her statement that Mandl has a vast financial empire in several South American countries is an exaggeration; Mandl is a man of means, but his holdings outside Argentina are limited; he was never, as Miss Prewett states a representative of the Hermann Goering Works; a similar article appeared in New York Times later; such articles are dangerous because they help to form public opinion and should not misinform.
