| dc.description.abstract | Located in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, Batsto was a charcoal burning furnace. Over the course of its industrial life (1766-1850s), Batsto contributed greatly to the regional economy, and also participated in a wider network of Atlantic commerce. The Richards family of Batsto operated many local ironworks, including Batsto, Atsion, Weymouth, Martha, Hampton and Speedwell. Working together to establish hegemonic control of the region's resources, brothers Samuel and Jesse dominated the local iron industry for half a century. Batsto can be viewed as a case study of the various factors encountered in iron production, especially labor concerns and technological advances. Batsto's products, especially the stoves and firebacks, speak to changes in the social and cultural spheres. The design choices and ornamentation reflect fashionable motifs and demonstrate the significance of cast iron as an interior decoration. | en_US |
