Enclosed with No. 796. Greek Minister, [Jean] Politis, called and reported having received a threatening letter from G.E.R. Gedye, New York Times correspondent in Vienna; Politis explained that because of difficult foreign exchange situation all letters to and from Greece were opened; Greek authorities had no interest in contents of letters other than exchange and currency control; Gedye had complained of having mail from the N.Y.Times Athens correspondent opened; his letter was abusive and threatening in tone; Politis said he would not reply to the letter in writing, but would telephone Gedye.
