| dc.description | This capstone project explores how nature-based solutions and adaptive reuse can be integrated within a post-industrial riverfront landscape to improve ecological performance, reduce flooding concerns, and strengthen cultural identity while providing value to surrounding communities. The project site consists of multiple brownfield parcels along the Passaic River in Paterson, New Jersey, including the historic Colt Armory Site and Valley of the Rocks Site. Decades of industrial activity have left behind contaminated soils, fragmented public access, hardened shorelines, and degraded ecological systems, creating an opportunity for landscape-based intervention. The project investigates the research question: How can nature-based solutions tied to the adaptive reuse of post-industrial riverfront land and infrastructure improve ecological performance and flood resilience while strengthening cultural identity and providing equitable value to surrounding communities? In response, the design transforms the neglected riverfront into a resilient public landscape that reconnects people with the river through ecological restoration, habitat creation, flood-adaptive infrastructure, and interpretive experiences that celebrate the site's industrial history. Key goals include improving biodiversity and water quality, mitigating flood impacts, adaptively reusing historic infrastructure, and creating accessible public spaces that serve both ecological and community needs. | |
