Enclosure: See No. 1869. Transmitting clipping, with translation, of article from Apr. 2 La Prensa giving full account of meeting in Ministry of Labor of representative of La Prensa with representatives of News Vendors' Union; it will be noted that the officer representing Ministry of Labor made it clear that the Ministry was taking no attitude in the matter; La Prensa properly denied petition of Vendors; importance of the matter lies not in the action itself but in publicity it has been given in U.S. and other countries, with implications that the Argentine Government was attacking La Prensa and in fact seeking to destroy freedom of the press; such is not the case; incident serves to point out desirability of accurate reporting by American news agencies and correspondents; certainly no editorial comments should be made until reports are verified; at least four American newspapers carried an identical editorial based on erroneous information.
