Abstract
Description
Never rich in material possessions but has been blessed with many enduring friendships; while in Curaçao became close friends of Maduro family which had come to the island in the 1500'S, and were most important family there; before leaving Curaçao was offered position in their business at $25,000 a year, a tempting offer to one whose salary at that time was $2,500; although salary increased over the years and allowances were made for rent, was never able to accumulate much and depended somewhat on wife's income; on retirement from Foreign Service in 1947, was approached in New York by two members of Maduro family who had just returned from family conference in Curaçao; they did not know what Messersmith's plans were or anything of his financial circumstances, but it was unanimous decision of family that whatever Messersmith might need at any time they would place at his disposal; they also said that if anything happened to Messersmith they would look after Mrs. Messersmith; assured them that if assistance was needed they would be informed.
