Abstract
This Executive Leadership Paper documents efforts to develop a comprehensive framework of promising practices to best serve Black and Latino boys. The educational and societal plight of this population is well documented and they are served in alternative schools and programs in disproportionate numbers. Based on experiences in the Parkway Academy alternative schools in Delaware, several promising practices have emerged to effectively serve these boys of color. These include single gender environments, restorative practices, mental health supports, innovative mentoring, and rites of passages. In addition to describing each practice, the paper reports the findings and reflections associated with each action taken. As a final element, the paper examines missed opportunities, recommendations for future actions, feasibility in a traditional school environment, and a personal reflection of leadership growth in the process.
