"Mahopac Chambers Community Park is a semester-long design project that reimagines an underutilized site as a resilient, community-focused landscape that integrates ecological function with public use. The design explores how stormwater infrastructure can be transformed from a purely technical system into an engaging and educational landscape feature that supports recreation, ecology, and community interaction.
Guided by the central question—How can stormwater infrastructure at Mahopac Chambers Park be transformed into an interactive, community-centered landscape while improving the streetscape to create a safer and more welcoming entrance to the park? The project proposes a network of integrated stormwater systems, including rain gardens, infiltration zones, and multi-use open spaces that actively manage runoff while enhancing the user experience.
In addition to ecological improvements, the design strengthens the surrounding streetscape by improving circulation, visibility, and pedestrian safety, establishing a clear and welcoming gateway into the park. The result is a balanced landscape where environmental performance and public life are interconnected, turning necessary infrastructure into a defining feature of the park experience and fostering a stronger relationship between people and place."
