AbstractThe deployment of white (high albedo) roofing is a common energy saving recommendation for a variety of buildings all over the world. Current literature states that a significant cooling savings can be achieved through the implementation of high albedo roofs, which can offset the heating penalty and cost of roof installation. ☐ This project focuses on the savings potential of high albedo roofing on an ice rink in the northeastern United States. We hope to find that a large portion of the ice rink heat load can be attributed to solar loading on the roof of the building. Therefore, by implementing a white roof, the ice rink would benefit from year-round savings of cooling energy. ☐ Several models are created through analysis of weather data and cooling energy data. The most accurate model is used to estimate white-roof savings potential. By using model parameter values, it is evident that a high albedo roof would only save the Skating Club of Wilmington 4.7 percent on refrigeration costs, much less savings than expected. Furthermore, this result is justified by comparing two similar September days to show that there is little to no change in refrigeration consumption when the building is covered by clouds or in full sunlight.en_US
