Original in Sypherd Papers. Since retirement from Foreign Service has had former secretary living in home as personal secretary; had hoped,with her help, to spend at least four hours a day writing, but work with Mexican Light and Power Co. has been so absorbing it was impossible to do any writing; even secretary spends her time on Company correspondence for which there was no time at the office; terminating arrangement at end of year; has somewhat lost desire to write; has not been well last few months, but feeling fit again now; has been working about ten hours a day since retirement from Foreign Service which is too much for 68; doctor says must slow down; spends every weekend at Cuernavaca and has decided to spend one week out of four there; spent few weeks in June in Washington, New York, and Toronto on business, but had no time to see old friends; passing of Pilling and Norris [Wright] has no doubt left vacuum in Sypherd's life; wishes Sypherd would come and spend a few weeks or month in Mexico; work during last four years has turned out well, and on whole is happy in life in Mexico; Caleb and Helene [Layton] spent month here at beginning of year; hopes they will return for January and February of next year.
