Abstract
This text advocates for integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into K-12 education to enhance students' spatial-thinking abilities and engagement across various subjects. GIS allows students to explore geographic data, ask questions, and create real-world solutions, using technology that combines software, data, and organizational frameworks. GIS is widely used by organizations like Domino’s Pizza, USPS, and emergency management agencies, and it was featured in media coverage by CBS. The Delaware Geographic Data Committee's GIS Education Working Group (GISEWG), comprising GIS professionals, has collaborated with educators to incorporate GIS in schools. GISEWG provides resources like mapping software, data, and project support tailored to classroom needs. Their projects include mapping watersheds for seventh-graders and using GPS data for environmental studies. GISEWG also offers workshops, presentations, and an annual GIS contest to foster student interest in geography. The group presents an annual GIS in Education Award to recognize contributions to GIS education in Delaware. GISEWG's ongoing mission is to support teachers in enhancing educational experiences with GIS.
