Abstract
Description
Enclosure: See No. 1843. Transmitting copy of article from Star-Times of St. Louis, Mo. entitled "What to do about Argentina"; calls attention to paragraph in which Argentina is referred to as "hotbed of fascism"; paragraph states Perón and his followers continue to make anti-U.S. speeches and dream of an anti-U.S. bloc in South America; since Perón became President, has never heard him make public or private statement which was unfriendly to U.S.; he has stated repeatedly his Government is not interested in a southern or Latin American bloc, but only in inter-American collaboration; when Argentine representative to U.N. made radio speech advocating Latin American as opposed to inter-American collaboration, Foreign Minister, with approval of President and Cabinet sent him telegram instructing him to refrain from further such statements as they were not in line with Argentine policy; articles such as this will do much harm to inter-American relationships; perhaps the information services of Department could perform service by bringing real facts to attention of the writer of such article or to the newspaper concerned.
