Abstract

Description

American Ambassador to Cuba must be careful not to throw his weight around; Cuba has traditionally been friendly to U.S.; Cuban people friendly, charming, and vivacious and feel grateful to U.S. for aid in securing independence from Spain, but any Ambassador who does his duty is bound to awaken enmity of certain people; Messersmith was urged by Batista to take precautions; told Batista it would be unhappy if American Ambassador went around with protection; learned later Batista provided protection anyway, but it was done so discretely Messersmith was unaware of it.
