Abstract
Description
Demonstration by Air Force unit successful in every way; estimated 300,000 to 500,000 attended and showed much interest; when visit was first discussed with Gen. Henry H. Arnold and later with Gen. Guy V. Henry and Col. Charles H. Deerwester it was the understanding that some of the planes would be left in Mexico as surplus and eventually be turned over to Mexican Government at no cost for use by Mexican Air Force and Mexican President was so informed; Col. Lessig, aide to Col. Kenneth Gibson, Commander of the unit, said it was his understanding that a price would be charged for planes left in Mexico; has given word to Mexican President and will not be party to breaking that word; planes to be left in Mexico are surplus and of no value to U.S. now; it would cost more to take them back than they are worth; asks to be informed if there are questions about the matter; has great respect for Col. Gibson; performance in landing B-29 at altitude of 7400 ft. on short runway magnificent.
