DescriptionArgentina has shown no interest in becoming member of Food Board; if Department thinks it would serve useful purpose to have her there, will be glad to discuss matter with Perón; may be able to convince him of long-range advantage; requests information on situation with regard to World Bank and Monetary Fund; understands Argentina has not been invited to join; would like Department's views on the subject; Argentina in favorable financial situation at present; trade agreement just signed with Spain; Argentina has tremendous potentialities, but because of incompetent governments in past, basic problems have been neglected; Perón at least attacking problems; he is not the dictator the U.S. press reports him to be and is trying to comply with all inter-American commitments; he desires very much normal relations with U.S.; thinks U.S. should not spell out specific firms and individuals in matter of enemy property and aliens; is concerned because of Spruille [Braden's] attitude and the press reaction to "Braden-Messersmith feud"; was aware of differences of opinion, but has high regard for Braden, and was not aware that there was a feud; Braden's trouble in Argentina was of his own making; Latin Americans are touchy on subject of an outsider meddling with their internal affairs, and, rightly or wrongly, the Argentines were convinced Braden was attempting to interfere in their last election campaign; this letter for Clayton personally; requests that it not be placed in files; during past week has felt much better than at any time since illness in July.en_US
