Germantown clocks, 1725-1800: a tall-case study in construction

Abstract

This thesis examines the construction of tall-case clocks made in Germantown, Pennsylvania between 1725-1800. In examining the construction of a small sample of clocks, the author showcases the analysis of furniture construction specifically adapted to clocks. In doing so, the author has identified several aspects of clock construction not previously discussed in clock literature. Therefore, the author hopes this work will be useful not only to those readers interested in Germantown furniture, but also to readers interested in the case-construction of clocks more generally.
